Ombak Rindu? Naaaah!

escapism [ɪˈskeɪpɪzəm]
n
an inclination to or habit of retreating from unpleasant reality, as through diversion or fantasy
escapist n & adj

Going to the movies is one form of escapism for me. The darkened theatre is a refuge and the two-hour movie provides a short respite.
But I don't this often; only when I need the distraction from work and people around me.
Because of this, I am very selective of the movies I watch at the theatres especially if I was to go alone.
I go for movies that acts like a "happy pill" … oh you know, one that leaves you with the positive feelings and energy.
You would then understand why I haven't gone to watch "Ombak Rindu", wouldn't you?
Not because it is a Malay movie but because of the soppy feel to it.
The other half went to watch "Ombak Rindu"; not with me but with his male friends.
He raved about the movie (Maya Karin's fine acting) and that his friends (and him included) were teary-eyed when watching the movie.
I have friends who had gone to watch the movie three times and I haven't gone to watch even once!
Now that it is on CD, the other half inquired if I already had a copy. I told him it didn't interest me when it was showing in the theatres nationwide. What makes him think I would buy the CD? I haven't even clicked the Astro First "Buy" button as it is now showing on the channel.
I remembered seeing the book in the Sri Ayu apartment when I stayed there a few years ago. It belonged to my niece, Ajai, who was then staying with me. It didn't interest me to read it, thinking it was another Mills & Boons but in Malay!
When the movie came out, Mysara remembered the title. "Buku Kak Ajai dalam bilik tengah masa kat Sri Ayu dulu. Sara pun ada baca dulu," she said.
She wanted to watch "Ombak Rindu" at GSC Alamanda Putrajaya recently but the brother, Danial, wanted to see the "Twilight" movie ("I don't do cerita Melayu," he said) but I had the last say.
We ended up watching "Puss In Boots" and "Happy Feet Two".
Yeah, I dragged the kids on my escapism spree!
Will I ever watch the movie? I can't tell you for sure that I would not. Maybe, much later.
But for the time being, can someone confirm if Aaron Aziz is the modern day Rosyam Nor?

Fauziah, I am clinging on to every word you say about Obak Rindu - have yet to watch it. and like you I have been reading rave reviews about it but unlike you, I have actually taken the first step to download the movie and then I will try to find some ME time and watch it. I have been TV bingeing lately and should give it a rest before I treat myself to Ombak. Then I will give you my verdict.

better watching crayon shin chan rather than ombak rindu..just typical malay love story movie, nothing different. I don't get why so much tears from people..it's just lame.

Salam Kak Teh
I'll probably watch the movie when all the hype has died down. I don't know when exactly but I know for sure it will not be anytime soon.
My male friends raved about Maya Karin while the girls were swooning over Aaron Aziz.

Salam Dr H
Saya kurang gemar filem yang membuatkan jiwa lara .... LOL! Saya juga kurang gemar filem yang membuatkan kita sedih pada mulanya and ends with a happy ending ... Apa motif sebenarnya filem sebegitu? I grew up enough of fairy tales macam tu ... cukup-cukuplah!
Thank you for visiting. Happy New Year to you too!

Salam Aya Sofia
Producers think they can sell movies like these (tear jerkers with happy endings) to Malaysians especially among Malaysian moviegoers and most often than not, they were proven right! Malay action movies pun ada elemen cinta yang kadang2 ter-over jugak!
Thanks for visiting ya!

Hi.. I also felt the same! The more people around me 'terlentok habis' about the movie, the more I avoid it like a plague. I think I rather watch ... Songlap?

We have our likes and dislikes. We differ in opinions.
Kalau tidak suka dengan posting saya, tulislah alasannya mengapa, bukan meminta saya "keep it to your sef...jangan nak komen2 pasal cerita melayu.."
Kalau nak komen pun, jangan guna emosi semata-mata but show some intellect and knowledge.

Salam & Hello Puan Fauziah,

I am so like you in that ... YES, I would rather see Puss in Boots and Happy Feet 2.  But alas, my youngest (a teenager) has passed this stage and moved on to the Twilight saga while mum is still stuck in her 'childhood'!

Personally, there are enough misery and unhappy endings in life itself so why would I PAY to see it? I like coming out of a movie theatre smiling and feeling good and happy - no matter if it's Malay, Hollywood or Bollywood. I will stick to the 'feel-good' movies thank you very much!
